thanksgiving in may

i’m very fond of thanksgiving … partly because bruce’s birthday frequently falls on that day … but mostly because it’s a great holiday – no gifts, just gorging on delicious food and drinking fine wine hopefully with good friends and/or family (though sometimes the latter is stressful by definition) … this is the closing lyric from a musical called family style which i wrote with janet hood … a family of friends is about to go their separate ways for the summer and beyond, so they decide to have thanksgiving then, since they won’t be together in the fall … have a great one!

ashlee, don’t fret

my niece, ashlee, turns 17 this month … she’s tearing up the golf courses of the southwest, having recently won the new mexico state high school women’s title (and she’s only a junior) … i wrote this a few years ago when i accompanied her to a round of golf (i’ve never played) and she didn’t shine as brilliantly as she hoped to in front of her uncle …
