oy

i wish i were jewish
so i could say “oy”
and not be thought
an impertinent goy

it’s such a great word
for expressing frustration
general annoyance
or mild perturbation

“ohmigod” says surprise
and is good for a shock
and “shit” will suffice
for defining a crock

but “oy” is so handy
so short and succinct
compacter than saying
“boy did that stink”

the perfect rejoinder
when news isn’t good
or when something you’re saying
is misunderstood

an apt exclamation
if life isn’t sweet
a nice little expletive
you needn’t delete

yes, i wish i were jewish
so i could say “oy”
but it doesn’t sound right
from an old gentile boy
