oh lord, please don’t kick my ass today

by the dawn’s early light
or somewhere thereafter
i hear the alarm
and remember the laughter
of the evening before
yesterday went quite well
but now what’s in store?
as i stumble from bed
i silently pray
oh lord, please
don’t kick my ass today

put my head back together
get my attitude up
skip exercising
and toss down a cup
of quick energy
get ready, world
to be conquered by me
one final inspection
as i timidly say
oh lord, please
don’t kick my ass today

and lord, it’s hard enough
don’t need any surprises
i try to keep steady
as the road falls and rises
i try to be strong
and face come-what-may
oh lord, please

don’t kick my ass today

so far, so good
on time for a change
even the weather’s
not overly strange
which it has been of late
am i getting too cocky
and tempting my fate?
any dues overlooked
i will gladly repay
oh lord, please
don’t kick my ass today
