thanksgiving in may

i’m very fond of thanksgiving … partly because bruce’s birthday frequently falls on that day … but mostly because it’s a great holiday – no gifts, just gorging on delicious food and drinking fine wine hopefully with good friends and/or family (though sometimes the latter is stressful by definition) … this is the closing lyric from a musical called family style which i wrote with janet hood … a family of friends is about to go their separate ways for the summer and beyond, so they decide to have thanksgiving then, since they won’t be together in the fall … have a great one!

have you noticed
the sparrows in the tree tops?
how they flock to form
a great big bird bouquet?
even if it’s only for a moment
they will gather before they fly away

some of us must migrate out of season
even though we might prefer to stay
i can’t think of any better reason
for us to have thanksgiving in may

and together we’re a party
we create an instant holiday
i’m with my friends and feel like celebrating
so what do you say?
let’s have thanksgiving in may

better take this fam’ly when you get them
‘cause they might be gone another day
would you want a year without thanksgiving?
okay let’s have it this time in may!

and together we’re a party
we create an instant holiday
i’m with my friends and feel like celebrating
so what do you say?
let’s have thanksgiving in may
what do you say?
let’s have thanksgiving in may!
