some things get better with age

july is a big month — bruce’s and my anniversay (26!) and my birthday (no comment, except to say we met in when we were in day care together) … the following was originally written as a poem and then three different composers set it to music without my knowledge … i did adapt it as a lyric and that is the version here …

youth has faded
another year today
time for looking back
asking how we came this way
some do not go gently
against the dying light they rage
but for now we sit contently
some things get better with age

the wine we are drinking
the way we are thinking
memories of our time upon the stage
the journey we are taking
the love we are making
some things get better with age

youth is dreamed of
by everyone it seems
why this should be so
i don’t know
i think youth is mostly dreams
i recall my story
and i’m glad i’ve turned the page
for my youth was not my glory
some things get better with age

the wine we are drinking
the thoughts we are thinking
memories of our time upon the stage
the journey we are taking
the love we are making
some things get better with age

some people fear another birthday
some think that aging’s a crime
if it’s true that the good die young
let’s be bad for a long, long time

youth’s a phantom
behind the looking-glass
laughing at the seed
gone to weed
from the splendor in the grass
gardens overflowing
from planting too much thyme and sage
but together we keep growing
some things get better with age

the wine we are drinking
the thoughts we are thinking
memories of our time upon the stage
the journey we are taking
the love we are making
some things get better with age
