the same river twice

you can’t ever step
in the same river twice
the minute you do
it’s gone
and though that river
might be paradise
once you’ve stepped in
it’s moved on

i’ve returned to this stream
since i was a child
used to hang off the cliffs
and play in the wild
used to conjure the future
now i reflect on the past
and the water flows by very fast

the wind never blows
the same currents along
the birds don’t repeat
their earlier song
but the banks stand guard
as the water runs by
the river has changed
so have you
so have i

now i watch other children
at play in the creek
a whole new world
happened this week
i don’t recognize them
or the life they will know
but the water continues to flow

you can’t ever step
in the same river twice
the minute you do
it’s gone
and though that river
might be paradise
once you’ve stepped in
it’s moved on
moved on
the river and you
have moved on
